Education and research
It is home to the University of Skövde, for example, with its first-class programs in computer game development, engineering and life sciences, as well as internationally competitive research.
Skaraborg is one of the Nordic region’s leading industrial regions, where the green transition is underway. A strong business sector is expanding, and several companies are setting up new operations. Among other things, AB Volvo is building a battery cell factory in Mariestad, Lantmännen is investing in a pea protein factory in Lidköping, Metsä Tissue is doubling its capacity, and Vajda is establishing a paper mill in Gullspång. Papershell has opened its first biomaterials plant in Tibro and Jula logistics has opened a new 90,000-square-meter logistics terminal in Falköping. Paroc is switching to electric melting in Götene and it is also in Götene that Arla is making its largest investment ever – approximately 3.2 billion kronor. The Prison and Probation Service and the Swedish Armed Forces are also expanding their operations.
